THE POD (Post OHSAA District) is intended to provide a post OHSAA District tournament option for teams ranking in the lower half of the state according to myhockeyrankings.com (which basically constitutes Division 2 in other OHSAA sports).  “We just can’t stand to see a high school senior end their career on the wrong side of a lopsided state tournament game” said Matt Belmonte on the Academy Hockey Club Board.  “So we created the POD as an option for the teams to have a better end-of-season experience, and for senior players, a better end of career experience.”

Games will be played at South Metro Sports in Dayton OH, February 28, 29, March 1, 2020.  Other OHSAA teams have expressed interest in participating and the POD plans to grow in coming years. “You just have to make sure not to exceed the season 35-game limit set by OHSAA administrators,” said Greg Gutterman the Academy’s President.

This year Beavercreek High School, Archbishop Alter (Dayton), Centerville High School, LaSalle High School (Cincinnati), Sycamore High School (Cincinnati) and Indian Hill Winter Club are participating in the 2nd annual POD Tournament.

2021 POD High School Hockey Tournament Information:

**Please plan ahead when scheduling for your season, as OHSAA teams must have 31 or fewer games scheduled (not counting OHSAA post-season district games nor pre-season games) to be eligible for THE POD, since the OHSAA season limit is 35 games total.

After a very successful third year, Year Four is fast approaching for the Academy Hockey Club “High School Fall League” at South Metro Sports. We offer a great pre-high school season playing opportunity that meets current OHSAA regulations for SWOHSHL, regional High School, and USA Hockey players in fun 4 v 4 non-checking format with USA Hockey certified referees.

This program is the perfect opportunity for all high school players (and particularly new high school players) to get a feel for the speed of the high school game in a low contact environment, with lots of open ice and fully refereed games.

Our program allows all area high school players an opportunity to get in some great/fun hockey at a reasonable cost (while balancing their Fall activities) in order to be better prepared for their high school try-outs and season.

USA Hockey registration for 2019-20 is required.

Our format:
> – Academy Hockey Club High School Fall League
> – September 8 – October 21
> – 5 Teams (arranged for competitive play within OHSAA rules)
> – 9 Games guaranteed including playoffs, with a possible 10th playoff game
> – Saturdays 11am, Noon start times and Sundays 11am, Noon start times
> – All games at South Metro Sports, Centerville OH (unless renovations are not complete)
> – Open to all SWOHSHL, regional High School and USA High School Players
> – Cost per player: TBD. We hope to be able to keep the cost the same as the last two years, which was $250.00 (a GREAT deal thanks to our Sponsors!)

FINAL 2019 AHC Fall League Schedule:

The NUGS Post Team, revived in 2019 by Head Coach Tony Morris after a nearly decade long hiatus, finished 3-1(!) in the Rock-N-Roll Cup Tournament in Cleveland, OH March 22-24, 2019.  The NUGS opened the weekend with a rocking 4-3 victory over Stick-Fix Cleveland AA on Friday, and on Saturday rolled over the Pittsburg Huskies A Major 6-4 and the Ohio Prospects A/AA 6-2.  The NUGS battled with the Cleveland Sharks AA and had a 3-3 tie going with 4 minutes left in the final game, but fell 3-6 with two empty net goals tacked on at the end.

Overall it was a fantastic showing for the NUGS against some very solid competition from Ohio and Pennsylvania select teams.  Great work team, and a special thanks to Coach Morris for his efforts!

There will be no Summer Academy Hockey Club Skills Camp in 2019 as in past years, but keep watching for updates on Summer 2019 Academy Hockey Club skills sessions, training sessions, fun hockey time, and learn-to-play-hockey opportunities.

With some much appreciated interest and effort NUGS Head Coach Tony Morris has resurrected an old tradition of a NUGS-Post team.  The NUGS are once again truly a Pre-Post Team playing a Post-Season tournament in Cleveland the weekend of March 21-23, 2019.  Best of luck to NUGS-Post in 2019 and hats off to Coach Morris for bringing the post season tradition back!

2019 POD Tournament Rules
TOURNAMENT RULES: The official National Federation of State High School Associations Ice Hockey Rules Book
2018 – 2019, as supplemented by Ohio High School Athletic Association Sports Regulations, shall be used in the
Tournament except as noted below:
1. TIME OF PLAY: Games shall be of standard 15-minute stop-clock period length with a game limit of 1 hour and 40
minutes. If it appears that stopping the clock will result in exceeding the allotted game time limit, the official timer
will advise both teams and the on-ice officials that a no-stop clock shall be instituted until the end of the game. No
time-outs will be allowed when a no-stop clock is instituted.
A one-minute rest period will be provided between periods one and two. If time permits, a ten-minute rest
period with an ice cut will occur between periods two and three.
2. TEAM ROSTERS: A maximum of 18 skater and 2 goalies may be on the bench.
3. TOURNAMENT REGISTRATION: The Coach or a Team Official must check in with the Tournament Director. A
point of contact should be assigned for updates.
4. PLAYER CHECK-IN: Teams must be present NLT 45 minutes prior to game time. Teams will warm up for 5 after
ice resurfacing from the preceding game. When the official is ready to start the game, both teams shall be ready to
play, or a forfeit will result. Due to scheduling considerations, games may start earlier than depicted on the
published schedule; therefore, all teams must be prepared to begin their warm-up 15 minutes prior to the published
game time in the event the preceding game concludes earlier than anticipated.
5. PLAYER’S BENCH: Only team players and a maximum of five team officials will be permitted on the player’s
bench per OHSAA policy. All players and any minors in the bench area shall wear a helmet at all times.
6. PENALTY BOX: Each team shall furnish one individual to supervise their players in the penalty box and maintain
penalty box door closure. This individual is a Game Official; therefore, this individual’s conduct while serving in this
capacity shall be above reproach and exhibit the highest standard of sportsmanship.
7. CAPTAIN AND ALTERNATE: The Coach or a Team Official shall provide the names of the Captain(s) and
Alternate Captain(s) to the referee or official scorer prior to the start of each game.
8. PROFANE LANGUAGE: Profane language will not be tolerated from any player, team official, parent, or fan.
9. UNIFORM COLORS: The HOME team shall wear either white or predominantly light colored jerseys.
10. EQUIPMENT: All players participating in the POD Tournament must wear equipment that meets the requirements
of the National Federation of State High School Associations Ice Hockey Rules Book 2018-19. All players must
wear mouth guards and approved helmets with operable and fastened straps.
11. MEDICAL ASSISTANCE: Emergency medical assistance will be available at each game.
12. PENALTYS/SUSPENSIONS: The National Federation of High School (NFHS) Ice Hockey rule book shall be used
for assessing and determining penalties. The Tournament Director has included the following points of emphasis
with additional tournament penalties to ensure safe/respectful play during the tournament.
GAME MISCONDUCT PENALTIES: A GAME MISCONDUCT penalty requires immediate removal from the
game. (NFHS Section 5, Article 1).
A player who incurs 5 penalties (any combination) in the same game shall be assessed a GAME
MISCONDUCT penalty and removed for the duration of the game. (NFHS Section 5, Article 2).
GAME DISQUALIFICATION PENALTIES: A game disqualification penalty requires immediate removal from the
game plus that player/coach is ineligible to play/coach the next TWO games. (NFHS Section 6, Article 2 as
Amended for POD Tournament)
Any player who incurs 5 Major and/or Misconduct penalties during the tournament, in any combination of Majors
and/or misconduct penalties (e.g. 5-minute penalty with a 10-minute misconduct for same infraction counts as 2
penalties under this tournament rule), will be assessed a GAME DISQUALIFICATION penalty and be
immediately removed from the game being played plus that player/coach is ineligible to play for the next TWO
tournament games. (NFHS Section 5 and Section 6 as Amended for POD Tournament)
Each game in the tournament counts as one game toward any penalty suspension.
Any Coach, Manager, or Team Official who has received a game disqualification penalty and/or suspension
shall not sit close to his/her team while the suspension is in effect.
Physical abuse of any official will result in a game disqualification penalty/suspension from that game and
all remaining games in the tournament.
13. TOURNAMENT SCORING: Each team will be guaranteed 4 games. The tournament’s QUALIFYING
GAMES shall be played on day 1 and 2 in order to determine the day 3 championship round
seedings. Championship round seedings are based on total accumulated points during the qualification
games. Each Qualifying Game has 5 possible points available awarded as follows:
1. One (1) point is awarded for each period won; One-half (1/2) point is awarded for each period tied.
2. Two (2) points are awarded for each game won; One (1) point is awarded for each game tied.
3. Zero (0) points are awarded for each period or game lost.
14. QUALIFYING GAMES TIE BREAKERS: If the score is tied at the end of a qualifying game, the game shall
end in a tie (there will not be an overtime or shootout to determine the winner).
If two or more teams conclude the 3 qualifying games of the tournament with identical accumulative point
totals, the following order of precedence will be used to break the tie and set the final championship seeding:
1. Head-to-head game score
2. Head-to-head game points
3. Won-Loss record
4. Goal Differential (goals scored minus goals allowed- max 5 per game)
5. Fewest goals allowed
6. Lowest total team penalty minutes during the tournament
7. Coin toss
15. CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND: Teams shall be ranked based on their total accumulative points earned during
the qualifying round (using tie breakers as applicable). The team that wins the game is declared the winner
(qualifying games period scoring does not apply).

3rd v 4th 3rd PLACE GAME
5th v 6th CONSOLATION GAME
CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND TIE GAMES: Games tied after the 3rd period shall play a sudden death
overtime period. Format is 3 vs 3 with a 5-minute run-time period. Clock stops on penalties so a 4 vs 3
powerplay opportunity is presented. If penalty expires, the player comes out of penalty box and 4 vs 4
continues until first stoppage of play at which point 3 vs 3 play shall resume on the ensuing face-off.
The CONSOLATION GAME ends in a tie after the OT period.
The CHAMPIONSHIP and 3rd PLACE GAME shall proceed to a shootout if the game remains tied after
the OT period. Format is 3 shooters per team. No player shall shoot twice unless all players listed on the
scoresheet have already shot during the shootout. Coaches or Managers shall designate the 3 shootout
primary players on the scoresheet BEFORE THE SHOOTOUT begins. If shootout continues beyond 3
shooters, the #4 shooter must immediately proceed to center ice for their shot or they forfeit their chance.
16. MERCY RULE: Since the score of each period played is relevant to tournament scoring and tiebreakers,
there is no mercy rule in effect for the Tournament and a game’s goal differential will not lead to a
change from normal stop-clock time keeping.
17. PROTESTS: NO PROTESTS WILL BE PERMITTED. If, during the course of the Tournament, rules
interpretations or clarifications are needed, the Tournament Director will provide the interpretation
or clarification and the Tournament Director’s decision will be FINAL.

Games will be played at the NTPRD Chiller in Springfield OH, March 1-3, 2019. “Three Southwest Ohio High School Hockey League teams have already expressed interest,” said Jeff Duford, the Academy Treasurer, “You just have to make sure not to exceed the season 35-game limit set by OHSAA administrators,” said Greg Gutterman the Academy’s President.
